Pterygium
Pterygium removal, with a lasting result.
A pterygium is an abnormal growth of tissue that spreads from the white of the eye onto the cornea, usually on the side nearest the nose. Sun exposure is the main cause.

Symptoms and causes
Sun exposure, written on the eye.
UV radiation from the sun is the main cause of pterygium. Good-quality sunglasses are the best way to prevent it.
As it grows, a pterygium can pull on the cornea and cause astigmatism. In severe cases it can spread toward the center of vision and seriously affect sight.
Common symptoms
A pterygium may cause:
- Irritation and redness
- A feeling that something is in your eye
- Blurred vision, often from astigmatism
- Visible tissue growing onto the cornea
Our approach
Excision with a graft, sealed with fibrin glue.
Dr. Neal removes the growth and places a graft to help keep it from coming back. Natural fibrin glue replaces stitches for better comfort and appearance, and our recurrence rate is under 2.5%.
Treatment options
From prevention to surgery.
Surgery is recommended once a pterygium causes irritation or blurred vision.
I
Prevention
Wear quality UV-blocking sunglasses outdoors to protect your eyes.
II
Pterygium surgery
Removal with a graft and fibrin glue, for a low recurrence rate and a comfortable recovery.
III
Corneal transplant
If the cornea is damaged, full-thickness (PKP) or partial-thickness (DSEK) transplants can restore clarity.
