Glaucoma care
Understanding glaucoma, the silent thief of sight.
Glaucoma usually advances with no early warning signs. Raised pressure inside the eye can permanently damage the optic nerve, and vision lost to glaucoma can’t be restored. That’s why regular eye exams matter.

How it progresses
Damage that goes unnoticed.
As glaucoma advances, permanent blind spots form in your field of vision. They often go unnoticed until the optic nerve is significantly damaged and much of your peripheral (side) vision is already lost.
Routine eye exams are the best way to catch glaucoma early and manage it before it affects your daily life.
Who is at higher risk?
Anyone can develop glaucoma. These factors raise the risk, and may mean you need more frequent exams:
- Age 45 or older
- Increased eye pressure
- A family history of glaucoma
- Severe nearsightedness (myopia)
- African American, Hispanic or Asian ancestry
- A past eye injury that caused bleeding inside the eye
Featured treatment
Voyager™ DSLT
Anaheim Eye Institute is among the first practices in Orange County to offer Voyager™ DSLT (Direct Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty), a non-contact laser treatment that is changing how glaucoma is managed and may reduce the need for daily drops.
Treatment options
Lowering eye pressure to protect your sight.
Every treatment plan is built around your eyes, your risk and how your glaucoma is progressing.
I
Medication
Daily eye drops are usually the first line of treatment. They lower pressure by reducing fluid production or improving drainage. Tell your doctor about any unusual side effects.
II
Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty
SLT is a painless laser procedure that lowers eye pressure. It may help you avoid more invasive surgery and reduce how much medication you rely on.
III
Incisional Surgery
For severe cases that medication can’t control. Procedures such as trabeculectomy and tube shunt implantation create a new drainage path for long-term pressure control.
