Farsightedness (hyperopia)

Farsighted? Make close-up clear again.

With farsightedness, close objects look blurry and your eyes work harder to focus. It happens when light focuses behind the retina, usually because the eye is slightly short or the cornea is flatter than usual.

Signs and causes

Why close-up looks blurry.

Many people are born farsighted, and young eyes can often compensate. With age, that extra focusing becomes harder, so symptoms tend to show up later in life.
Farsightedness is different from presbyopia, the age-related loss of reading vision, though the two often happen together.

Common signs

You may be farsighted if you notice:
  • Blurry vision up close
  • Eye strain or aching eyes
  • Headaches after reading or screen time
  • Tired eyes by the end of the day

Vision correction

Options for every stage of life.

Mild to moderate farsightedness can often be treated with LASIK. For higher prescriptions, or if you’re over 50, refractive lens exchange often gives better, more stable results.

Treatment options

Ways to correct farsightedness.

Your prescription, age and eye health guide the best approach.
I

Glasses and contacts

Help your eyes focus up close and reduce strain.
II

LASIK or PRK

Reshape the cornea for mild to moderate farsightedness.
III

Refractive lens exchange

Replaces the natural lens with an implant, often best for higher prescriptions and patients over 50.

Your next step

Read comfortably again.

A comprehensive eye exam measures your prescription and helps you choose the right correction.
