Nearsightedness (myopia)

Nearsighted? Bring distance back into focus.

With nearsightedness, things up close look clear but faraway objects blur. It happens when light focuses in front of the retina instead of on it, usually because the eye is slightly long or the cornea is steeply curved.

Signs and causes

Why far away looks blurry.

Nearsightedness often starts in childhood or the teen years and tends to run in families. It can progress as the eye grows, then usually stabilizes in adulthood.
An eye exam measures exactly how nearsighted you are and checks the overall health of your eyes.

Common signs

You may be nearsighted if you notice:
  • Blurry vision at a distance
  • Squinting to see clearly
  • Eye strain or headaches
  • Trouble seeing while driving, especially at night

Vision correction

Freedom from glasses may be possible.

LASIK can treat nearsightedness up to about −11.00. If LASIK isn’t right for you, PRK or a lens-based option may be.

Treatment options

Ways to correct nearsightedness.

The right choice depends on your prescription, your corneas, your age and your lifestyle.
I

Glasses and contacts

Simple, reliable correction for most prescriptions.
II

LASIK or PRK

Laser vision correction reshapes the cornea to focus light on the retina.
III

Lens options

An implantable lens (ICL) or refractive lens exchange for high prescriptions or thin corneas.
